In Barbados, procurement is part of the specification
Barbados sits in the Eastern Caribbean, well east of the islands closest to our Florida port of origin. That geography changes how a roofing package has to be planned. On a mainland project, a missing box of fasteners is a phone call and a next day delivery. On a Barbados project, the same shortage crosses open water and clears customs a second time, and the crew waits.
This is the part of the job most sources ignore. The material research a Barbados design team finds online is written for somewhere else: United States installers marketing services they cannot perform here, manufacturer literature that stops at the datasheet, or freight forwarders who quote a container without any view of what is inside it. None of them connect the exposure conditions, the assembly, and the shipping sequence into one decision. That connection is the work.
To be clear about our role: NTC does not install and does not manufacture. We are a supplier and distributor. We help you specify, we source the package, and we set the shipment up to sail and clear so your team is not chasing forms or managing a freight forwarder. Installation stays with your qualified contractor, where it belongs.
Salt air and humidity govern the material choice
Barbados is a small island. Very little of it is far from the water, which means salt air, sustained humidity, and hurricane season exposure are the governing conditions on nearly every site, not just the beachfront ones. Salt does its damage quietly and continuously, and it attacks the small components first: fasteners, flashings, clips, and finishes. A roof rarely fails at the middle of a panel. It fails at a detail.
The consequence for specifiers is a sequencing rule. Coastal grade metal selection belongs at the design phase, not at procurement. Once a specification is written around a cheaper substrate, the corrosion path is already committed, and no amount of careful purchasing later recovers it. By the time the package is out for bid, the durability decision has already been made.
Choose the coastal grade at design phase. Procurement can honor a specification, it cannot rescue one.
Wind performance belongs to the assembly
It is worth stating plainly, because a great deal of marketing copy blurs it. Wind resistance is a property of the complete installed assembly, not of any product. The deck, the attachment method, the fastening pattern, the edge and corner detailing, and the quality of the workmanship together determine how a roof behaves under load. No membrane and no panel is wind rated on its own, and any material that is presented that way should raise a question.
What we can do is make sure the components you receive match what was specified, share manufacturer assembly documentation, and coordinate with your team on attachment and detailing questions so the specification and the installer are working from the same intent.
Lead systems for Barbados work
Barbados is a mature hospitality and institutional construction market, and those building types point to low slope and coastal sloped work in roughly equal measure.
- FiberTite single ply membrane for low slope commercial roofs. Hospitality, institutional, and commercial buildings are dominated by low slope assemblies, and a proven single ply system gives the design team a well understood path for waterproofing and detailing.
- Coastal grade metal for sloped and highly exposed elevations, selected for the corrosion environment rather than for the lowest delivered unit.
Around the primary system we supply the fasteners, flashings, coatings, and accessories that complete it, so the assembly arrives as one coordinated package instead of a mix of parts sourced separately and hoped to be compatible.
A recognized benchmark, not a Barbadian requirement
The products we distribute, including FiberTite membrane and metal, have passed Miami Dade product approval testing. Miami Dade is among the more demanding product approval programs in the region, so it is a useful benchmark for how a material behaves under severe wind and weather exposure.
It is a benchmark and nothing more. It is not a Barbadian requirement, and we do not present it as one. Barbados maintains its own building provisions, and your project answers to those and to the local authority having jurisdiction. Confirm current requirements for your specific site with that authority and with your engineer.
Transit, customs, and the items that get held
We coordinate the logistics through the Florida port and arrange the sailing. Ocean freight is billed to you, and we set that side up so it runs cleanly: the shipment is arranged to sail and to clear, and you pay the final bill rather than assembling paperwork.
The planning guidance we give is honest about the calendar. The Caribbean markets closest to our port of origin need one to two weeks minimum for shipping plus customs clearance, and everywhere else in the Caribbean is longer. Barbados is not one of the closest markets. We will not publish a delivery date we have not committed to in writing for your specific order, and you should be skeptical of anyone who does.
- Certain roofing adhesives are hazardous materials. They are quarantined on arrival for roughly three days and require their forms filed correctly. Filed correctly, they move. Filed loosely, they sit, and the membrane that needs them sits with them.
- Order accuracy is a schedule issue, not a paperwork issue. A wrong or short item is not a next day fix here, because the replacement crosses water and clears customs again. That is why we verify quantities and compatibility against the specification before anything ships.
- Work backward from the dry in milestone. Order to the milestone with margin built in, not to a delivery date.
Streamlined supply
NTC holds no warehouse inventory of its own. Depending on the product, material ships directly from the manufacturer or through our distribution network, whichever route is most efficient for that order. On a large project that structural difference shows up in the delivered package, and it also means what arrives is current manufacturer stock rather than product that has been sitting.
Import duties are a real budget factor and vary widely by market. We will not quote a rate for Barbados. Confirm the applicable duties with the local customs authority or your broker so the number in your budget is the number you will pay.
